A petition has been made to ban Alexei Yagudin from providing commentary at ISU sanctioned events.
“This week, the top skaters in the world are headed to Stockholm, Sweden for the 2021 World Figure Skating Championships. Twelve months ago, this event was canceled due to the start of the global COVID-19 pandemic. The last twelve months have given all of a chance to reflect on how we as a society can be better, lift one another up, and value all cultures and communities, no matter what color, creed, gender identity or sexual orientation.
It is with this consideration that we believe it is time for Alexei Yagudin to be banned from providing commentary on Channel One in Russia (первый канал) and at any future events sanctioned by the International Skating Union due to his repeated comments (and actions) about skaters that are homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, racist and promote rape culture.
Figure skating events in Russia are now streamed on YouTube for global audiences to watch. With so many countries examining abusive coaching methods, improper power dynamics and sexual impropriety in the sport, it is our belief that the global skating community must take a stand and prevent Alexei Yagudin from having a global platform. We can do better.”
