You can’t always do a perfect job and today was not a good day. I know I can do much better in practices, I had great run-throughs. I didn’t have a good warm-up; I usually never fall in practice, and during the warm-up today I fell twice. Then in the program I started really good with the quad. But then I started losing it in the jumps, I felt like the jumps today were really big and I couldn’t control them. I have to find the mistakes and do a great program the day after tomorrow. I’ll have to give my best and try to catch up – we’ll see what’s going to happen. These are the 6 best skaters from the beginning of the season and it is not an easy competition for me. I haven’t seen the other skaters’ results yet, but I’m sure there will be a few really good skates.
Patrick Chan (CAN), 2014 Olympic silver medalist & 2016 Four Continents Champion
I’m pleased with my performance. I’ve done that performance like that before so I’m not surprised. I just did my job, stay calm and stay relaxed. With how many competitive men there are here it’s hard to stay relaxed. The quad toe didn’t feel perfect on the take-off and I had to fight for the landing of the triple toe but I didn’t panic and was able to keep my rhythm. (on his approach to the Free Program) I’m going to go in with the same approach as today. I want to do two solid quad toes and a quad Salchow which is my focus.
Shoma Uno (JPN), 2015 ISU Grand Prix Final bronze medalist
(on falling on the quad toe) it’s not only about technique with the jumps, it is also about how I prepare for the short program and my failure today was the preparation. I will make sure that before the free skate I sleep a lot and rest as much as possible in between the early morning practice and the evening competition.
Nathan Chen (USA), 2015 ISU JGP Final Champion
It was OK, I made mistakes on the Lutz and the flip but I’m happy that I did a good triple Axel because that’s my trouble jump. It´s a really good experience for me so I’m happy to be here. (On the mistakes) I think I was maybe a little bit tight, a little bit nervous, I didn’t let myself relax into my edges enough. (On plans for the free) Obviously I’d like to skate cleaner than today and I’d like to hit the Lutz and flip at least. I’m really excited to be here though, it’s a new step for me.
Adam Rippon (USA), 2016 Skate America & Trophée de France bronze medalist
It’s really great to be here, it’s kind of a bonus and I want to just do what I’ve been doing and put out two good programs. I’ve got the crowd on their feet today and that’s kind of what my goal was. I had a lot of fun, it’s really great that there was this nice response from the crowd. I’m the skater with the least quads here, so I’m trying to do my best and improve for the Nationals and hopefully for Worlds. For the free, I don’t want to do a cheated triple toe (the toe was called underrotated), I want to skate well, land the quad and take one element at a time.
Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN), 2014 Olympic Champion & 2016 World silver medalist
I wanted to get my Personal Best here so I’m a little disappointed. I felt a little confused when I took off for the quad loop but I fought really hard and I think I stayed really focused so I was able to land it. I need more practice. (on his relationship with the audience) Usually I never see the audience when I’m doing a competition but tonight I felt like it was a concert, like it was live, when I was in the program so, you know, I was really happy connecting with the audience.

Yuzuru Hanyu (JPN), 1st after the Short Program
(on his performance in the short program) I’m satisfied with my short program today but also a little disappointed. I feel a little disappointment because I feel it was a little sloppy, a little hard work, I felt a little tired. But I also feel really good about my short program, so I am keeping all my concentration on the day after tomorrow [the free skate]. (on skating to Prince and the music’s connection with the audience) Actually I have never connected to an audience like this since I was born, or since I started skating, but this program feels like a concert, like it’s live. I want to be their rock star. I believe this program cannot be completed without the audience so that is actually my goal: to complete this program with the audience. (on getting used to the ice) when I got on the ice this morning I felt really comfortable. I don’t know if the ice was adjusted or if my body adjusted to the ice. I do not know the answer but I think that probably my body was more rested and my body condition is just getting better. (on his quad loop) of course I am not completely satisfied with my quad loop today. I have new homework! But I’m glad I think I got all the Level 4s. I can improve my spins, I can spin faster, I can improve my skating skills, I can even polish up my jumps. I’ve found a lot of new assignments here. I think this program has a lot of potential to improve. I really wanted to improve my Personal Best score here so that’s one of the things I’m a little unsatisfied about. (on balancing the demand for quads and high scoring skating skills) Up until Skate Canada my priority was to make my quad loop more secure. That doesn’t mean I was neglecting skating and other things but still that was my priority. But after Skate Canada I felt good about my program; that was a good learning experience for me. I learnt that I wanted to combine the skating and the jumps as a whole package so since then I have been concentrating more on putting the whole package together in competition and on connecting everything to make a complete package. (on his advice to younger skaters) I actually don’t have any advice for the junior skaters. I practice with Jun Hwan Cha and he has a very good consistency in his quad Salchow and he’s good with skating and with expression. I think he has everything already, I really don’t think that I have any advice to give. In fact, I think they give me some motivation. Alexei Krasnozhon is the one who tried the quad loop, it wasn’t completely clean but it was ratified so that gave me the motivation to succeed on my quad loop. They give me motivation.
Patrick Chan (CAN), 2nd after the Short Program
I felt pretty happy about today’s performance. I went in and it didn’t feel any more special than a usual training day which was the plan. The goal was to just go out and do my job. It’s my first good short program internationally in a while and Saturday is another day so I’m looking forward to that. (on whether moving to coach Marina Zueva means he focuses more on the dancing element in his training) I think it is actually the opposite. I have worked with many coaches, Kathy [Johnson] and Marina, who have a background in artistry and dance and lots of experience in that world, but actually when I moved to Canton and started working with Marina and Oleg [Epstein] and Johnny [Johns] it was about controlling everything and bringing everything back in. All I think about is my jumps and being confident on the landings and being more technical, on cleaning up the landings and the little details. We work on the spins a lot and the footwork. It’s especially important in an event where men are doing many, many quads that my way of working is thinking about the quads but also not forgetting about the footwork. Today was great, I was able to do Level 4 footwork which was Level 3 in the other Grand Prix [events]. -2-
(on whether he will introduce two quads to his short program) I am waiting [until next season]. I haven’t put any thought into it just because the Grand Prix season goes by very quickly and there is not much time between events so I have not really thought about it. But I think logically it is the next step to put another quad in the short program because as the long program is set up currently I do quad, Axel and then [quad] Salchow, so it is a possibility to put it in the short program too. (on balancing the demand for quads and high scoring skating skills) My priority right now is just to stay healthy. I’ve just come back to competition and I am just focusing on resting and making sure my body is healthy otherwise I cannot challenge myself to do the quads and the skating skills and everything else.
